AoS Sensory Friendly Character Breakfast for our Children with Special Needs

A trip to Disneyland to visit the characters or one of those cool character breakfasts can be intimidating and difficult if our kids have to wait in endless lines, deal with large crowds of people or characters who may not understand if our child responds differently.  During a recent conversation I was having with a parent of a child with autism, she told me ‘I’d love to take my child to Disneyland and have breakfast with all the characters like typical families but my fears of her possibly screaming, crying and flapping her arms while people stare, it just doesn’t seem like a safe option to me.’

So Angels on Stage (AoS), a theatre troupe for children with special needs, developed an alternative to spread a little excitement and offer some joy and happiness to our families by offering a Sensory Friendly Disney Character breakfast event.

AoS will be performing Beauty and the Beast in March 2013 so they have characters like Belle, the Beast, Mrs. Potts and Chip who will appear at the breakfast.  The qualified staff of AoS, made up of educators and service providers of children with special needs, know what to expect.  They work with children like ours every week and they care and understand how to respond and interact with them.

Applebee’s (555 Saratoga Ave – San Jose) has offered their restaurant to AoS from 8am – 10am on Sunday, December 9th and the hostess, waiters and busers will also be AoS staff and supporters who are sensitive to our children and their families’ needs.  It’s the ideal atmosphere to experience the magic of a character breakfast without the long lines, crowds and social expectations of Disneyland.  We want to keep the breakfast affordable so tickets are only $10/each, available at www.angelsonstage.org

This breakfast promises to be a fun-filled morning where your child can be in a safe environment, surrounded by an understanding community who is there to offer a magical experience in the most supportive way possible.  There will be photo opportunities and autographs, so bring your camera!  We hope you will ‘Be Our Guest’.
