SOCIAL SKILLS AREA

  • Relationship Development Intervention
    Connections Center director, Dr. Steven Gutstein, author of Autism/Aspergers:Solving the Relationship Puzzle and creator of RDI (Relationship Development Intervention), has set up an archive of social and emotional exercises that is updated weekly. Activities include specific objectives and step-by-step instructions. Accessing the archive is free of charge. Just go to the Connections center website, www.connectionscenter.com , register and you can browse the activities. You will also receive regular emails describing the latest activities and additions to the site. On the web site you can also find dates and locations for RDI Training for Parents and Professionals. This methods of social skill development has received the endorsement of many notables in the field of Autism, including Tony Attwood, Peter Mundy, Peter Hobson and Nancy Minshew.

  • “Understanding and Teaching Friendship Skills” by Tony Attwood, PhD author of “Asperger Syndrome: A Guide for Parents and Professionals” and Carol Gray of Social Stories. This article is a link to Dr. Attwood’s webpage. Please take time to read other articles on his page and check his presentation schedule.

  • Five Survival Strategies To Help Children With Asperger’s Syndrome Overcome Inertia by George T. Lynn, M.A., C.M.H.C.

  • Asperger Syndrome: A Clinical Account by Lorna Wing. This 1981 paper is what first brought the term “Asperger Syndrome” to the attention of researchers. This links the Surrey Branch of the National Autistic Society in UK. Visit their Main Page.

  • “Asperger’s Syndrome, High Functioning Autism, and Disorders of the Autistic Continuum”  by Sally Bloch-Rosen, PhD. Read this paper on Dr. Bloch-Rosen’s AS website.

RELATED DISORDERS

  • Pervasive Developmental Disorders by Luke Y. Tsai, M.D. This is a link to a very good paper located on the NICHCY webpage. It describes all five pervasive developmental disorders (of which AS is one)and focusses on PDD-NOS.

  • Semantic-Pragmatic Disorder This is a wonderful resource for SPD. Another disorder very similar to AS. I highly recommend this page.

  • Mission Possible Employment Services for People with Asperger Syndrome

    This business was opened in 1995 to offer a service that helps people with Asperger Syndrome(AS) and more able autism acquire vocational skills and find meaningful work. In addition, they present workshops and seminars.

    The David Center is a new Long Island-based group dedicated to providing guidance, education, and support for families of children with autism spectrum disorders and related disorders through a network of parents and professionals.
